FDA clears upgraded Quell wearable pain relief device

By Lisa Cantkier

Quell, created by NeuroMetrix, is a wearable device that can relieve chronic pain via neurostimulation technology in people with a wide range of chronic pain conditions, such as sciatica, fibromyalgia and others. The wearable device is 100% drug free. In a recent 60-day user trial, 81% cited reduced pain with Quell. It was first released to the public in early January, 2015. Now one year later, an announcement was made on January 6, 2016 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provided clearance for Quell’s upgraded version device.

Available to the general public in March, 2016, the upgraded version of Quell, “Quell Relief smartphone app” provides users with the option to control their therapy with the use of this mobile app. This means users can turn the device on/off and increase/decrease therapy levels through their mobile phone. The app offers sleep tracking, which analyzes how much time a user sleeps, as well as their body positioning and movements while sleeping. An extended battery life is included. NeuroMetrix will have a free upgrade program for Quell users who send in their previous devices when the new version becomes available.

“This 510(k) further advances Quell technology by allowing the device to be conveniently and safely controlled via a smartphone,” said Shai Gozani, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO NeuroMetrix. “It is a clear example of our unwavering commitment to creating the most clinically effective and technologically innovative wearable therapeutic solution for people suffering from chronic pain.”
